Driving Across America: Texas

TEXAS
5/14 Woke up to every kind of bird noise. Peacocks, turkeys, guinea hens, roosters, morning doves. Stumbled into the office for coffee. Went on the cavern tour. We saw 2 miles of over 7 miles of underground trails and rooms. It was literally out of this world. We gave the lady in the office some rocks we found on the North side of San Everisto. She had no idea what they were. A Doctor Geologist is coming there in 2 weeks. She’s going to have him run tests on them and email us the info! We’re hoping they’re something special because we have a whole freezer bag full. After that we got on 290 through Hill Country. Beautiful rolling hills. We saw an armadillo, porcupine, horses, cows, antelope, deer, sheep, and goats. The highway was lined with wild flowers, dill, sage, and lavender. Fields of pecan, walnut, almond, and peach trees. We stopped for a wine tasting in Fredricksburg. Only #2 to Napa in the states for wineries! We had some really good Texas wines from old-world grapes, who knew!? Got back on the highway to Austin. Stopped at Malaga restaurant for tapas and wine! Austin seemed to be a funky, hip city. I called it the “anti-texas”. We were planning to meet up with a highschool friend of mine for the night, that I haven’t seen in over 7 years, but timing didn’t work out. So we got on the 35 north to Belton Lake. We found the Owl Creek campground, which was free! High winds. Popped the tent at 1:00AM on the lee-ward side of the Volvo. Of course our first thunderstorm in over a year explodes open during the night!
5/15 Back on the road to Dallas. Planning to stop and see Cameron, my college room-mate who I haven’t seen in over 5 years! Stopped at the Dallas Public Library to work on the website and pass some time. This place is 8 stories tall!

  1. Yessss caverns!! Cool about the rocks, hope they tell you something neat about them!
We did some wine tastings last weekend here- Currituck wines. Some pretty yum stuff, we got a few bottles. There's a wine fest there this weekend and we're gonna go and drink some MORE!
