Ensenada del Candelero on Isla Espiritu Santos

Espiritu Santos
3/12 calm night. “Sara M” gone this morning. Alan pushed his 54’ vessel out of the bay with his dinghy! Solo sailors are a different breed. We are getting ready to leave for one of the islands, depends on how nice it is out there. Anchor up at 10:30AM. Not much wind. Motor sailed out. Almost halfway to the island the afternoon wind picked up to 10-15 kts. Off the coast of Espiritu Santos we had a rushing sail weaving and tacking through Isla Gallena, Gallo, and Ballena while playing chicken with a few motoring sailboats. It’s crazy how some boats don’t even take their sail covers off, let alone hoist the things! Pulled into Candelleros. Anchor down at 15:00 in 17’ of low tide water. Scattered sand, reef, rock, and grass patches. Beautiful stone red walls. Hiking to springs and fig trees tomorrow. Gusty north wind hitting the anchorage. Not the best, but the wind should be dying tonight. Caught some stingrays and a few other fish that I think are either mangrove snapper or grunts.
3/13 the wind shifted and calmed last night. Did a few 360ºs. Glad the anchor line didnt wrap or snag on unfamiliar rock or reef. North wind picked up hard again. Still gusting North occasionally after long calms. Going for a hike. Might move to Partida if wind doesn’t calm down like forecasted. Breathtaking hike up the arroyo canyon. Spring well. Fig trees just getting fresh for spring. Crazy cliffs and views. Snorkeled off the small rock islet by the shore. Two kayak eco-tourism camps set up on the beaches. Gusty north wind all day. Switched to SSW after sunset. Great day.

us en route to the island. always showing our passages into la paz and all the anchoring in the surrounding areas.
